Pics of Fiona on the Meadow Mountain Trail

June 12th - Attack of the ants... in Fiona's world

Day 2 of our vacation. Actually, this is our first full day in Vail. We all woke up around 7:30 a.m., and for those of you who know us, this is early for us. Colin made a wonderful pancake breakfast, and then we decided to take a hike.

The trailhead was about 3 miles from our villa, and we actually went to the wrong trailhead first, because our concierge gave us incorrect directions. Nevertheless, we finally found the correct spot to start the Meadow Mountain trail. Again, the concierge was not entirely correct. She said that up and back was 3-3.5 miles. I need to inform her that 2/3 up, which is where we stopped and ate lunch, was 2.4 miles. By the time we returned to the car, we had hiked 4.8 miles. Fiona kept seeing ants, and so she wanted to be carried most of the way. We kept saying how we wished she wasn't too big for the Kelty pack, but instead I get super mommy arms. The view was amazing, and where we stopped we some some beautiful wildflowers. Fiona insisted that I take a lot of pictures of her holding rocks (one of her favorite things to collect). The "pose" chosen was all her idea.

When we arrived back at the villa, Colin took Fi to the playground, and I went out for my last run of my 90 day program! 40 minutes today. I have to say that running at 8,000 feet is a little more difficult. I ran all but about 5-7 minutes. There were a couple of hills I just couldn't do.

Once again, an early bed! More adventures tomorrow.

FIONA - ready and waiting for the airplane

She was very excited about having her own "special airplane" backpack. I filled it with coloring, books, and a few new surprises for when the time was right.

June 11, 2006 Colordo Trip

Sunday June 11, 2006

Today we left for Colorado. This was a much-anticipated trip, and in some ways I feel bittersweet at its arrival. Our flight left the Indianapolis Airport at 7:30 a.m. This sounded like a good idea when I made the ticket reservations, but after just a few hours of sleep, and leaving the house at 5:15, I was having second guesses. I am always surprised at how many people there are on the road this early in the morning, especially on a Sunday. We had two bags to check, one was Fiona’s and the other ours. I thought our suitcase felt a bit heavy, but Colin thought it was probably under 50 pounds. Well, it was not. It was more like 62!!! The ticket agent asked if we wanted to redistribute or pay $25. I said we’d pay the $25. We had already waited in line 15 minutes, and the line was extremely long behind us. She said in a very quiet voice, “Remember this for next time”, and she didn’t charge us. We then proceeded to our gate, stopping to get a few kolaches. Boy, if you have never had a kolache, you are really missing something. I think that I am going to try and find a recipe when we get home.

We sat at our gate, and waited for boarding time. Our plane was on time, and all three of us slept the first part of the flight. I am pretty sure that we were out before the plane left the ground. We arrived in Denver right on time, and the weather, although a little hotter than I hoped, was beautiful. The Denver airport is huge, and so it took us quite a lot of time to get our luggage, and then to our rental car. The rental car, which I thought was a discount, was more than a few miles away. Finally, we headed to Myron and Mary’s new house. It is a really cute house north of Denver, with a lot of old-house charm. (hardwood floors and cute windows) We then went to lunch with them at the Atlanta Bread Company. We were really hungry since we had had our kolaches eight hours before. Fiona hit it off with Myron right away, and she had him chasing her all around.

Off to Evergreen, where we went for a brief visit at my Aunt and Uncle’s house. Uncle Dave was in London, but Aunt Ellen, Becca, and Scott (my cousins) were all home. We were all pretty lazy, but the visit was wonderful. Fiona was at home in just minutes. She was playing with Scott and Becca like we had never left. Finally, with the hour getting late, we had to go to the grocery store and head up to our final destination, Vail.

I had menu-planned for the whole week, so our shopping trip was pretty fast. The trip to Vail took a little over an hour and a half. We are staying at Marriott Streamside. It is a resort in West Vail, and it is beautiful. Someone gifted us a week in this place, and I wish we never had to leave! To our surprise, the place had been recently remodeled, and it’s gorgeous. The kitchen has granite countertops, and a beautiful tile floor. The living room is nice and airy, and the master suite is unbelievable.

After a long day of traveling, I went up to the clubhouse to run 25 minutes as part of my 90-day program. I couldn’t skip because today is day 89! We all went to bed and slept like logs.
